Today was grueling. 64.7 miles but in mud it feels like 90. We wanted to stop in Oldtown MD but there was no place to eat or sleep. We wanted to get off the Canal but one look at Route 51, with trucks blasting by at 60 mph and no shoulder, convinced us that we could slog through another 15 miles of mud.
The lodgings are so bike-friendly. This morning our hostess at the 1828 Trail Inn sent us off with fresh oatmeal-cranberry muffins as a riding snack. They were fantastic. Every place has a bike-washing station with towels to dry the bikes. Very necessary when your bike looks like this:
That third water bottle was full but even after we ran out, we decided to go thirsty rather than drink out of it. We were so glad to see Cumberland. This was a long, hard day. Tomorrow we are only going to go 44 miles to Rockwood PA- I think we need an easy day.
