Over dinner we discussed the differences between a journey, a pilgrimage and a quest, and which this was. Is this merely a journey? Is it a journey to a place of mystical significance to us? Or are we seeking something that we most likely will not find--our lost youth perhaps? Is this our way of denying our mortality? We will be pondering these questions as we pedal into a headwind in western North Dakota, I'm sure. What I can say is that this journey has been calling to me for 40 years, ever since I began cycling.
