Our rest and relaxation here in Oakland continues. Roy's back is recovering. Turns out it was a typical QL muscle strain. 5 days after the event, it suddenly got better on its own. Nevertheless, I'm seeing a Holistic Physician/Chiropractor who was a classmate of Robert's and whose office is in nearby Alameda. She's giving me exercises and other advice on how to strengthen myself and prevent recurrences.
We are working on a comprehensive summary of all the lessons learned and things that worked, for the future benefit of anyone who might be tempted to embark on a long-distance bicycle trip (including ourselves). Everything from gear, clothes, tools, route planning, daily distances, training, etc. One lesson learned (see preceding paragraph) is that if you over-do it physically, you are going to pay a price. I will need reminding of that fact, I'm sure.
Our summary will be posted at the end of August, after we've had a chance to edit it on a desktop computer with a proper keyboard.
